"'The Destiny of Earthseed is to take root among the stars,' I said . . .
'It's a destiny we'd better pursue if we hope to be anything other than smooth-skinned dinosaurs—here today, gone tomorrow,
our bones mixed with the bones and ashes of our cities, and so what?'
"'Space?' he said. 'Mars?'
"'Beyond Mars,' I said. 'Other star systems. Living worlds.'"
"'Aye, well,' Macx leans back, aggrieved. 'Ah've got–' He pauses. An expression of extreme confusion flits over his head. . . .
'No, that cannae be right. Ah wiz gonnae sell ye somethin' ye cud use fer'–his face slumps into a frown of disgust–'free?'"
Living Worlds Productions is not a real company, just a name I happen to like. In keeping with Adelphia's free webspace policy,
this site has no commercial purpose; all the content here is free to look at, although not all of it is free for you to use. Basically,
you can take anything that contains material owned by people other than me, because that means I can't copyright it.
For example, the site logo above is based on the painting "Portrait of the Milky Way" by Jon Lomberg, which I am using without
permission, so the logo cannot be copyrighted or used for monetary gain.
Similarly, the symbol I use to denote external links is an image of a "linking book," the core fantasy device
in the famous
Myst series of computer games.
The marquee lights are my own design, but they are also part of my
effort
to extend the fictional religion of
Earthseed posited
in Octavia Butler's books (
Parable of the Sower and its sequel,
Parable of the Talents). I described the lights
in the second paragraph of
this weblog entry.
